“Your father, Jo. He never loses patience, never doubts or complains, but always hopes, and works and waits so cheerfully that one is ashamed to do otherwise before him.”
― Louisa May Alcott, Little Women
Father’s Day History
How did Father’s Day begin? Well, there are a couple of stories involving two women, living on either sides of the country, who suggested to their churches that fathers should be recognized–just as mothers were on Mother’s Day.
Back in 1909, Sonora Smart Dodd sat through a Mother’s Day sermon in her church located in Washington State. As she listened to the sermon praising mothers, she decided her father should be celebrated in the same way.

A year earlier and further east, a deadly mine explosion killing 361 men occurred in Fairmont, West Virginia. Grace Golden Clayton made a suggestion to her minister that a service be held, honoring fathers, after the tragic incident.
It wasn’t until 1966, President Lyndon B. Johnson officially made the third Sunday of June Father’s Day.
I found it strange–Mother’s Day preceded Father’s Day by fifty two years! Officially, anyway. I mean, dang, that’s a long time of not giving dad his day.
But then again, I was an 80’s baby. My dad never missed a sporting event, honor roll ceremony, participation award…you get the idea. Honestly it would be hard to compete with my dad. He really is the best.

Back in the 1900’s fathers’ roles were a little different. Same responsibility: support and protect, but maybe a little less hands-on. Mothers maintained that role–hence the 52 year gap in honorary days!
Dads’ involvement with kids have evolved over the years. Through various social and economic change–along with ever booming technology–today’s dads have the opportunity to be part of the nitty-gritty kid raising.
So let’s get down to the celebrating! And by celebrating I mean BUY HIM something. Something good!
So I thought about all the gifts I’ve given over the years, and a few new ones that I would like to give. I narrowed my list down to 10 gifts where you can’t go wrong.
